Lead With Love: How To Stop Managing From Fear And Start Building Teams That Thrive

If you have ever micromanaged a checklist, dreaded walking the halls, or felt exposed by a title you were still growing into, you are not alone. I’ve been there. I once led from fear without even realizing it. Today’s post is the roadmap I wish I had sooner: how to replace fear-based leadership with a love-led approach that creates trust, ownership, and results.

The Moment Everything Flipped

Fresh out of SMSU with a management degree, I landed a housing manager role in a dementia care community. I loved the mission, but I was in the weeds. I tried to control every fire, measured my worth by being needed, and walked around looking for what was wrong. That is fear leadership in action.

Then two things happened.

  1. A mentor told me to get out. Not quit. Literally step out of the day-to-day and reconnect with the community, vision, and growth.
  2. During the pandemic, control evaporated. What I could still control was me. Fitness led me back to personal development, which led me back to real leadership. I learned to say, I do not have all the answers, but we will figure it out together. That honesty became the bridge from fear to love.

What It Means To Lead With Love

Love in leadership is not romance or fuzzy feelings. It is a set of repeatable behaviors that make work safer, clearer, and more human.

  • Assume positive intent
  • Choose curiosity before judgment
  • Be responsible to people, not for people
  • Model optimism and steadiness
  • Tell the truth early and often
  • Build systems that let others win without you hovering

Every interaction either raises or lowers the energy in the room. Leading with love raises it.

How Fear Shows Up At Work

Check yourself against these common fear patterns.

  • Micromanaging instead of coaching
  • Fixing fires that your team can handle
  • Hoarding context or information
  • Reading minds and writing “shitty first drafts” about people’s motives
  • Avoiding vulnerability like I do not know yet or I got that wrong

If any of these sting, it means you care. Good. Keep going.

Five Micro Shifts That Change Everything

You do not need a personality transplant. You need small, consistent switches.

  1. Language switch
From Why didn’t you… to Help me understand what you were seeing.
From I need you to… to Here is the outcome, you own the how.
  2. Context, then task
Share the why, the guardrails, and the definition of done. When people know the game, they can play to win.
  3. Assume positive intent
When someone seems off, choose the generous story first. It protects the relationship while you get the facts.
  4. Coach with questions
Ask What options do you see, What would you try next, and Where do you feel stuck. Return ownership to the person closest to the work.
  5. Operate your altitude
Leaders toggle among three levels: vision, systems, and moments. Schedule time at the top two levels so you do not get trapped in daily flames.

A One-Week Love-Led Sprint

Try this fast, practical reset.

Day 1
List three fear behaviors you want to retire. Pick one to replace this week.

Day 2
Hold one 15-minute “context-first” huddle. Share the why and the finish line before any tasks.

Day 3
Give one piece of specific appreciation that links effort to impact.

Day 4
Run a five-question coaching chat with a direct report: goal, reality, options, choice, next step.

Day 5
Practice the positive-intent pause. When a message pings wrong, breathe, clarify, then respond.

Day 6
Declutter your role. Identify one recurring fire your team can own. Transfer it with clear metrics.

Day 7
Reflect. What felt different, what resistance showed up, and what will you keep.

Scripts You Can Use Today

  • Set expectations
Here is the outcome we are driving, here are the constraints, and here is how we will measure success. You own the approach. What do you need from me to remove friction.
  • When you do not know
I do not have the answer yet. Here is what is true, here is what we are exploring, and here is when I will update you.
  • When someone is off
I noticed you were quiet in the meeting. Anything on your plate I should know about, or did we miss something you need.
  • Redirect micromanage-y moments
You have the context and the goal. Walk me through your plan, then run with it. I will check back Friday on progress and blockers.

Signs You Are Moving From Fear To Love

  • People volunteer problems early
  • You hear more ideas than excuses
  • Meetings get shorter and clearer
  • You leave work tired, not drained
  • Results improve because ownership improves

Final Thought

Leading with love is not being nice. It is being responsible for the experience you create. It is choosing curiosity, clarity, and courage in every interaction. Fear shrinks teams. Love scales them.

Lead with confidence. Lead with love.
